Trauma can be the result of a stressful, and surprising event that occurs. Trauma can happen due to an event such as but not limited to war, domestic violence, grief, loss and nature or manmade disasters such as hurricanes. Trauma is an emotion response to events that are categorized as “traumatic” and cause significant distress to an individual. Symptoms of shock and denial are common after these events, and are often followed by flashbacks, nightmares, inability to sleep, strained relationships and at times even physical symptoms such as headaches or nausea.

Causes of Trauma:

  • Sexual, Physical or Emotional Abuse

  • Domestic Violence

  • Disasters

  • Life changing events

  • Being involved in, or witnessing firsthand any of the above

  • Having a close loved one experience the above

Common Types of Trauma Disorders include:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): individuals who present symptoms a month after a life-threatening event.

  • Adjustment Disorder: response to an identified stressor such as a life changing event, the termination of a relationship, grief and loss, arrival of new baby, natural disasters and so forth.
